Event Continues to Grow and Support Local Cause

Farmington, PA (May 21, 2013) –  Nemacolin Woodlands Resort is once again hosting the Five Alarm Mountain Madness Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, June 8th from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Designated a Regional Cook-Off by the (ICS) International Chili Society, the Mountain Madness event will welcome cooks from across the country as they compete in Red Chili, Verde Chili and Salsa categories.  Although the cook-off is the highlight of the day, the event will include a Brewfest featuring local and regional Breweries, radio broadcasts, a craft fair, family adventure activities and live entertainment.   A number of Pittsburgh athletes and broadcast personalities are donating their time to help select the winning cooks in three categories.

“When we began this event back in 2010, we knew that we wanted to create a festive day for our guests and community, as well as tie in a give-back element”, said Chris Plummer, General Manager.  Proceeds from the Cook-Off will again benefit the Farmington Volunteer Fire Department. “Last year’s event was very significant as the Fire Department was instrumental in controlling the massive blaze that destroyed our ski lodge in February of 2012.  This year it will be more of a celebration as our new Sundial Lodge stands in its place.” added Plummer.  Over the past two years, the Mountain Madness Cook-Off has generated more than $18,000 in contributions for the department.

This year’s Cook-Off will feature appearances by well-known athletes and personalities. Pittsburgh Steelers Brett Keisel, Cameron Heyward and Doug Legursky, have graciously agreed to support the event and the Farmington VFD by participating as celebrity chili judges.  The field of judges also includes regional food writers, Clear Channel radio personalities and WTAE-TV’s morning anchor, Michelle Wright, who will not only test her palate but will be on hand to emcee the awards ceremony.

The traditional “Lighting of the Stoves” marks the start of the official competition as cooks from throughout the United States compete for cash prizes as well as vying for the opportunity to advance to the World’s Championship.  Local residents are invited to test their culinary skills in the Community Chili Cook-Off held in conjunction with this event. Festivities will also include a Restaurant Division in which local chefs and businesses can compete for prizes and more importantly, bragging rights.  In addition to the Chili Cook-Off and tasting, guests can enjoy a wide array of activities throughout the day.

This year’s Five Alarm Mountain Madness Festival will be centered near the new Sundial Lodge which reopened in December 2012.  This new event layout will allow guests to take advantage of the adventure center activities with the purchase of a specially priced All Access Pass.  Live musical entertainment will include The Delaney’s and the Travis Minnick Band, while WDVE will provide broadcast music throughout the day. Crafts and carnival games are planned for children while adults are invited to taste a variety of signature beers at the festival’s Brewfest.

Admission to the Five Alarm Mountain Madness Festival is free of charge. Chili Tasting Kits are available for $5.00 with all proceeds being donated to the Farmington Volunteer Fire Department.  A portion of Brewfest revenues and various raffles throughout the day will also benefit the firemen.
