Impressive Facility To Open Just Months After Tragic Fire

Farmington, PA (December 4, 2012) –  Nemacolin Woodlands Resort is making good on its promise to open their new Sundial Lodge in time for this year’s ski season.  The original Sundial Ski Lodge, constructed in 1995, was destroyed by fire on February 12, 2012.  On December 24, the Sundial Lodge will open to the public with a new look and a host of new amenities.  The original sundial sculpture, which survived the blaze stands at the entrance of the new facility as a reminder of the past and a gateway to the future.

“The Sundial project has been a true reflection of the spirit and culture of Nemacolin Woodlands and that of our business partners” explains Chris Plummer, General Manager of the luxury resort southeast of Pittsburgh.  “Insurance procedures and site work delayed the official groundbreaking until July 20 and yet we are still on schedule to open the doors when we welcome skiers on Christmas Eve.  Our resort associates, architects, contractors and vendors have committed countless hours to ensure that the Sundial Lodge is completed in time for the ski and holiday seasons.  I would also be remiss if I didn’t again thank all of our vendors, emergency responders and area residents as well as our neighbors at Seven Springs for their amazing support immediately following the February fire.”

Guests and residents may notice that the resort has dropped the word “ski” from the complex name and for good reason.  In addition to the ski operations and rental shop, the new Sundial will house Apex, a casual bar and dining outlet, along with bowling alleys, arcade games, a retail shop and Adventure Headquarters.  Once recognized as the hub of winter activities, the Sundial will now be open and offering dining and activity options year-round.

Designed by DRS Architects of Pittsburgh, the new facility also has a different look both inside and out featuring 200 feet of nearly continuous floor to ceiling curtain wall offering panoramic mountaintop views from the bar, dining room and outdoor terraces.  The dining and bar area of Apex sit beneath a custom-designed heavy timber roof structure of natural Douglas fir while the building’s focal point is certain to be the dramatic natural stone hearth and the chimney towering a full two stories through the heart of the lodge.

In conjunction with the opening, the Sundial Lodge will host live musical entertainment nightly through December 30 and feature food and beverage specials. Resort holiday guests as well as local patrons are invited to join in the festivities and experience the new Sundial.  Photos and construction progress are posted on the resort’s Facebook Page and a complete opening week schedule can be found on the events calendar at nemacolin.com.
